A Little About North Charleston’s Past

Up until the Civil War, the area now known as North Charleston (sometimes called The North Area), consisted of Plantations. After which the large plantations were subdivided providing smaller parcels for farming. The US military found the area to be strong and opened the Navy Yard in 1901. During World War II, much development occurred as the military bases were expanded. “The Yard” provided thousands of jobs for many in the Charleston area right up until it’s closure in the 1980’s. Also in the early 1900’s, industry began to move in with extensive strip mining occurring right along the Ashley River. A group of local businessmen, in 1912, formed a development company with the idea of developing an industrial city. The area known as Park Circle was actually planned as one of only two US garden city models. Most of the original concept is still seen here today with areas reserved for residential, commercial and industrial uses. In 1972, the residents of the North Area won their fight to govern themselves, establishing the City of North Charleston.

City of North Charleston

The City of North Charleston is the third largest municipality in the State of South Carolina. Over 80,000 people live within the 60 square miles that make up North Charleston. The growth that has occurred here is remarkable and doesn’t seem to have an end in site. North Charleston is located within three counties – Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties and is northwest of the City of Charleston. Its proximity allows the residents of the tri-county area to take advantage of all North Charleston has to offer. The Performing Arts Center provides for an intimate concert or even a Broadway play. The larger North Charleston Coliseum allows for larger concerts, ice skating performances and the circus. During the hockey season, the Coliseum is home to the Charleston Stingrays. North Charleston is a community that is self sufficient with recreational activities, public and private schools as well as Charleston Southern University, many places to worship, great dining, plenty of shopping and an excitement for continued growth.
